In this Black History Month, I thought it would be timely to feature one of Canada’s preeminent Black voices, El Jones, who offers some powerful words on being Black in Canada.
She’s a poet, journalist, professor and activist who advocates for the use of spoken word as a tool for liberation and activism, finding her inspiration in the Black community of Nova Scotia.
She doesn’t mince words in A White People’s Guide to Black History Month while her powerful Emancipation Day poem sheds light on slavery in eastern Canada and the struggle for freedom:
