TODAY is the International Day for Tolerance, a reminder to help spread tolerance and raise awareness of any intolerance that may still be prevalent in the world today. Although we should be tolerant every day, it’s always good to have one occasion to remind us just how important tolerance is…and how much it is so badly needed.
On November 16th 1995, UNESCO created the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance as a way to define and provide awareness of tolerance for any and all governing and participating bodies. We now recognize the anniversary of that Declaration by celebrating the International Day for Tolerance.
Hate seems to be a constant in our human society, so learning how to move beyond it towards respect and mutual understanding is one of the most important things we can teach our children. One of the first steps towards resolving conflict is embedding tolerance into the everyday. This need for tolerance is something we can't overemphasize to our children. Building on that as the basis for how they approach each other, and the world in which they live, can only improve their relationships and their approach to the social contract.
Mutual understanding, respect and dialogue underpin a better world. Let's focus on what we have in common, doing no harm, and building a peaceful future together, and we can transform the way our societies work…..for the better.
STOP the hate. Dare to change the world today.
