Today, is the National Day of Racial Healing in the US, a day observed annually to promote truth, healing, and transformation in our communities. It was initiated by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and is now a key part of their Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation efforts. The day aims to bring people together to share stories, engage in discussions, and work collectively towards racial equity and healing.
The National Day of Racial Healing puts particular emphasis on children. One of its core goals is to create a more just and equitable future for the next generation. By involving children and youth in these discussions, the day aims to educate and empower them, helping to build a strong foundation of understanding, empathy, and racial equity from a young age. It's about planting the seeds of racial healing and transformation early on so future generations can continue to work towards a more inclusive society.
So, word to the wise - start early.
Why is it important?
Acknowledges past wrongs: This day provides an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the historical and systemic racism that has impacted communities and individuals.
Promotes understanding and empathy: By engaging in open conversations and listening to diverse experiences and perspectives, participants can foster greater understanding and empathy.
Builds stronger communities: The activities and discussions on this day help create a sense of belonging and shared connection, which are essential for building inclusive and resilient communities.
Inspires action: The day encourages individuals, organizations, and policymakers to take concrete steps towards addressing racial inequalities and building a more just society.
Like I always say, there's no better time to change the world for the better than now.
