What's all the hubbub about parental rights?

Updated: Sep 23, 2023

In the aftermath of nation-wide protests about the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in schools, CBC tries to unpack the meaning of parental rights and how the idea of parents rights has reshaped the debate over LGBTQ inclusion in schools.

Are parental rights violating the rights of children? Whose rights should take precedence in school? Should parents be the final arbiters of what their kids are learning in school or does this restrict them to the potentially discriminatory values their parents hold dear? What is the best way to keep children safe, healthy and happy, particularly those who may fall outside the standard gender binary?

The argument surrounding parents’ rights and LGBTQ inclusion in schools has been a contentious issue. Some argue that parents should have the right to decide what their children are exposed to in terms of LGBTQ topics, while others believe that LGBTQ inclusion is essential for creating safe and inclusive learning environments.

CBC’s Brent Bambury has an illuminating conversation on the issue with Dr. Jen Gilbert, a professor of education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. She focuses on gender, sexuality and LGBTQ issues in education.

There are clearly different perspectives on this issue, but it’s crucial to consider the well-being and safety of all students. How we do that is tricky. Schools and policymakers often strive to strike a balance between respecting parents’ rights and ensuring LGBTQ inclusion. But for some it’s a balance that can’t – or shouldn’t – be struck.
